The Return of the King review

We saw The Return of the King at the Megascreen cinema in Auckland. I think it's an Imax screen, though a lot of the screen wasn't used (different ratio, you see). It was very big though, and another bonus was we got to see a good trailer for Spiderman 2 before the film.

I enjoyed the long, third LOTR film. A common complaint is that it goes on a bit after the climaxes, but I think that's largely the book's fault. Peter Jackson has improved on the book in some ways, especially by removing a bit where Sam runs about wearing the ring in order to hide from Orcs. That bit was silly in the book, and it was good to see it wasn't in the film. (Though it was also silly that almost all the Orcs were dead when Sam got there.)

I've heard critics (especially Kiwi ones) say that this film is the greatest film of our time. I think that's a bit much, though it is a relief that this film is up to the standard set by the previous two. It've had ruined the trilogy to have a duff third part.

Looking forward to the extended version now. The current version should be called "The Shortened Version". (At nearly 3.5 hours!)

All in all, a really good set of films. Best watched in six sittings in my opinion.

Four and a half stars.
